A Vanuatu warclub from Melanesia
An elegant war club from Vanutau (Malenesia). Good old warclubs from Vanuatu are hard to find these days. This example dates from the 19th century and gained an excellent patina through the years. The shape is simple, yet elegant. The shaft has a barely visable curve on the bottom with a knob to maintain grip. The club is tapering towards the end and has a straight flat surface.
There are numerous different club styles from Vanuatu. Many Vanuatu clubs have a distinctive pommel at the bottom like this example.
Condition: Very good, a small chip off the pommel and some superficial scratches due to it’s age.
Provenance: French private collection
Thickness at widest point: 5cm
Thickness at smallest point: 2.4cm
